Carrier Ethernet

With the growing need for higher bandwidth capacities and the increasing variety of Next Generation applications and services required to be transported across the network, the evolution of Service Provider networks is moving away from traditional TDM based networks to Ethernet and IP technologies that can support very high data rates, Quality of Service and multiple concurrent services in a cost effective fashion.

The key benefit of Ethernet technology is that it can be deployed end-to-end across the service provider environment. This can be done in geographically diverse locations (e.g.rural, metro wide are and global) using a wide variety of underlying technologies (e.g. optical, WiMAX, GPON, IP/MPLS), thus enabling the Service Provider to provide seamless, high quality cost effective services.

New Ethernet based services, (e.g. ELAN & ELINE services) can be accommodated on the carrier backbone IP/MPLS networks with the use of technologies such as VPLS (Virtual Private LAN Services) and pseudo wires as well as a variety of access network technologies, (e.g. GPON, WiMAX, ADSL). These services are not only restricted to newer technologies, but can also be accommodated over older legacy environments such as Ethernet over SDH.

With the rapidly evolving toolbox of technologies (e.g. Q in Q, 802.1P, VPLS) and equipment that can be used for the deployment within the Carrier Ethernet environment, a significant number of design options come with a variety of strengths and pitfalls.
