At their inception, DNS was a handy method to access websites and applications and DHCP was virtually unheard of. They were usually managed by whoever understood them and relied on “free” systems such as BIND/DHCPD and Microsoft DNS/DHCP. Sometimes spreadsheets were the basis to maintain essential protocol services (i.e. DNS & DHCP). These systems often evolved with
a collection of “Do-It-Yourself” tools maintained by a small team of experts. This hindered operational and planning decisions when those experts moved on to other roles or to other organizations.
Today’s need for IPAM begins with IP address discovery, tracking, and allocation. As networks grow, keeping track of multiple types of data pertaining to devices on the network adds complexity. IT vendors are creating new tools to help track network devices, but the information is often not centralized, eroding confidence in the data’s accuracy and timeliness.
Infoblox commissioned Tolly to measure and verify the time and cost savings comparing Microsoft’s manual network update processes to the Infoblox DNS, DHCP & IP (DDI) automated platform.
